Radio Bobby: Top 5 New Music Releases (8/26)

Fresh off the MTV VMAs this past Sunday, people should have expected a whole lot of new music, right? – wrong.  A few big name artists dropped new singles – namely Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Dierks Bentley, Jason Derulo and Miley Cyrus, who will probably benefit from the buzz she generated for herself on Sunday’s show. Here are this week’s Radio Bobby Top 5:

wrecking ball miley cyrus1.  “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus (pop) – I love everything about this electro-ballad, that’s what I’ll call it.  The lyrics, phrasing, instrumental and the emotion shining through.  Check it out – Miley, consider yourself redeemed.  Grade: A

2.  “Rock ‘n Roll” by Avril Lavigne (pop) – Avril’s back with what I’m suspecting will be her latest catchy tune you’ll find hard to erase from your head.  Wait for it, you’ll see – in the process, you’ll probably learn to really like it.  Grade: A

3. “Berzerk” by Eminem (rap/hip-hop) – It’s been said, “Shady’s back.” I was really into this new song – until the “bom-chick-a-wow-wow” part – it was so obnoxious, and for me, it took the song down just a tad.  Coulda been No. 1 Shady, coulda been no. 1.  I’m a fan – just no more cheap lyrics please – otherwise this song’s A-game Eminem. Grade: A-

4. “Divine Light” by The Deer Tracks (alternative) – A nice catchy song that may make you move around a little in the dark.  Feels very … sultry and eerie – who’d have thunk that’d ever be a good combo – I guess The Deer Tracks did.  It’s quite nice. Grade: A-

5. “Free Tonight” by Divided By Friday (alternative rock) – Divided By Friday sounds a bit like Panic at the Disco – but their newest single is kind of like a feel-good freedom anthem.  Grade: B+

Dierks Bentley put out a generic country song “I Hold On” – which falls shy of the Top 5, alongside Jason Derulo’s newest song “Marry Me”, which is sure to become, you guessed it, a proposal anthem.  So many people are about to be proposed to with Derulo’s song – and it’ll probably get the GLEE treatment – but that doesn’t mean it’s Top 5 worthy – just worth a mention.

Radio Bobby: Top 5 New Music Releases (8/19)

Last week’s Top 5 was dominated by single-leaked-heaven – you know, those singles that leaked and were subsequently released early?  Lady GaGa’s “Applause” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.” This week, it’s lookin’ a lot like a good ol’ country takeover!

Charlie Worsham1.  “Young To See” by Charlie Worsham (country) – “Young To See” is Charlie Worsham’s 20-something anthem about taking risks – and living your life in the now – to reach for and achieve your dreams.

2.  “Rubberband” by Charlie Worsham (country) – “Rubberband,” the title track from Charlie Worsham’s debut album is a contemporary country song that infuses a little life into the often over-bland world of country music.

3. “That Girl” by Jennifer Nettles (country) – Nettles takes a breather from her career as part of Sugarland to release “That Girl,” a single about not wanting dirty love – and not wanting to be “that girl.”

4. “Frames” by Lee DeWyze (alternative) – Didn’t Lee DeWyze win American Idol? How many years ago? Who is he? Exactly.  His debut album under-performed and now DeWyze appears as an afterthought.  Until now.  DeWyze’s new album and new songs (including my favorite from his album, “Frames”) should ensure more success than his previous trial.

5. “Clouds” by Travis Garland (pop) – Travis Garland returns with a should-be hit pop song. His career should take off from this point.  That is all.

Overall Predictability Rating: 78%

Live from the “City of Angels,” WWE will host its 26th annual SummerSlam pay-per-view event on Sunday, August 18 – and the card is stacked, from the pre-show to the main event.  Here is an up to date match listing and my predictions for the summer’s biggest party.

RVD vs. Ambrose - SummerSlamPre-Show – United States Championship Match:  Dean Ambrose (c) vs. Rob Van Dam

Since returning to the WWE, Rob Van Dam has been on a roll, though the build-up between RVD and the Shield’s leader, and reigning US Champion, Dean Ambrose has been pretty weak.  Still, RVD didn’t resign with WWE to flirt with the main event and not be at least a mid-card champion.  Even so, RVD doesn’t need the championship like Ambrose does.

Predicted Winner:  Dean Ambrose

Nattie vs. Brie - SummerSlamTotal Divas Grudge Match:  Natalya “Nattie” Neidhart vs. Brie Bella

Both women are featured on WWE and E!’s hit reality show Total Divas.  Their tension has been teased behind the scenes, and WWE recruited Extra‘s Maria Menounos to compete alongside Nattie against Brie and Total Divas co-star, and rookie Diva, Eva Marie at the SummerSlam Axxess event.  The build to this match has been done through the reality show, backstage vignettes, and where most Diva feuds escalate – on twitter.  That said, Nattie and Brie are both strong workers, so this could be a decent match – with time, and without the involvement of all the other Total Divas who will be ringside.  With a recent victory over Diva’s Champion AJ Lee, Nattie seems poised for a push.

Predicted Winner:  Nattie

Rhodes vs. Sandow - SummerSlamCody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow

The former tag team partners (The Rhodes Scholars) will collide in what should be a potential show-stealing bout!  Rhodes has a wrestling pedigree and Damien Sandow is gold in the ring.  No matter who wins, one thing is certain, wrestling fans aren’t going to lose.  I have to give a slight edge to the Money in the Bank winning Sandow though, as Rhodes has had the upper-hand for most of their brief rivalry – though Rhodes needs this win.

Predicted Winner: Cody Rhodes

Ziggler-Kaitlyn vs. BigE-AJ - SummerSlamMixed Tag Team Match:  Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn vs. Big E. Langston & Diva’s Champion AJ Lee

Kaitlyn and the Diva’s Champion AJ Lee have been engaged in a feud built on years worth of personal relationship and months of intense battle over the Diva’s Championship.  This Sunday, AJ Lee is the only common denominator – as she’s been affiliated with all three of the participants.  Dolph is her former beau, Big E is her best friend, and Kaitlyn is her greatest threat.  AJ is by far the most over person in this contest and one of WWE’s biggest, most featured stars – her crowd-reaction is only rivaled by Dolph Ziggler. Still, I can’t see the victory going to the champ – she’ll need a competitor come Night of Champions in September – and this match should either guarantee that it will be Kaitlyn, or the previous match involving Divas should push forward a new number one contender.

Predicted Winners:  Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn

kane vs. bray wyatt - summerslamRing of Fire Match:  Kane vs. Bray Wyatt

Since making their debut, the Wyatt Family has been unstoppable; Kane has been their target.  SummerSlam marks Bray Wyatt’s debut match (under the Wyatt name) and he’s hoping Kane will “follow the buzzards.”  Still, I think the momentum is too great for the veteran star to overcome, even if he has a proven track record in inferno/fire matches.  It should be an exciting contest, but I suspect someone may run the risk of getting burned – so I’m sure there will be a spot where fans react simply with a chant of “holy shit.”

Predicted Winner:  Bray Wyatt

Christian vs. Del Rio - SummerSlamWorld Heavyweight Championship Match:  Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Christian

Since taking the title off Dolph Ziggler, Del Rio has been overly aggressive in the ring.  He’s been a strategic champion, targeting and hammering body parts of his opponents.  Christian, fresh off of an injury return and a “one more match” campaign, will find himself in danger – and his shoulder at risk.  Del Rio isn’t my favorite star, but as a heel, he’s definitely doing his job and proving his worth as a champion, in what I think is his best title run ever.  I don’t see Christian being able to conquer Del Rio, but hey surprises are possible, just unlikely – and I think it’s too soon for Del Rio to be relinquishing the gold.

Predicted Winner:  Alberto Del Rio

Lesnar vs. Punk - SummerSlam“The Best vs. The Beast” Match:  CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar w/ Paul Heyman

This match featured two “Paul Heyman guys” and two of WWE’s most underrated, yet popular, established stars.  I’ve been vocal about not supporting Brock Lesnar, I can’t stand the guy – so I hope Punk kicks his teeth down his throat before he makes him tap out with the Anaconda Vice! The wildcard in this match is Paul Heyman himself (and his latest protege, and Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel). That said, Punk is going into this as the underdog.  Week after week, Lesnar has battered Punk and Heyman has evaded Punk’s grasp.  At SummerSlam though, I think Punk gets his hands on Heyman and gets the one-up on Lesnar, who seems destined to lose when it counts in his latest WWE run.

Predicted Winner:  “The Best in the World” CM Punk

Cena vs. Bryan - SummerSlamWWE Championship/Special Referee Match:  John Cena (c) vs. Daniel Bryan w/ Triple H as the referee

It was only a matter of time before WWE’s top two stars collided.  Over the last year, Daniel Bryan has become wildly popular with the WWE Universe.  Heading into the summer, Bryan was rumored to begin a program with champion and company face John Cena.  Cena, who took the strap off of The Rock at WrestleMania 29 is having an incredible year – but a rumored injury and time off – may be the nail in his history-making 11th reign as WWE Champion.  There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Daniel Bryan deserves this opportunity to carry the WWE title and that’s why I think his momentum is unstoppable – the WWE Universe wants this – they’ll be chanting “Yes! Yes! Yes!” the entire match.

WWE COO Triple H is the factor in this match though.  He’s rumored to be turning heel and that may spell disaster for Daniel Bryan.  Then again, Money in the Bank winner Randy Orton is absent from the card and has been lurking in the shadows of John Cena and Daniel Bryan’s feud – I suspect a cash-in may be in order.

Predicted Winner:  Daniel Bryan

However, I think WWE may take the title off Cena, and then rob Daniel Bryan of his opportunity and the WWE Universe of their desires.  I think a pedigree from Triple H to Daniel Bryan and a cash in by Randy Orton should leave the WWE with their desired heel turns of Triple H and Orton while seguing into their next feud:  Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan.

Predicted Winner:  Randy Orton

Best Body 2013: Check-In (8/15)

update3Hello again everyone.  Here we are with another #BestBody2013 update.  Last time I checked in I had a few goals:

(1) Consistency:  It was my goal to log a minimum of 11 work-outs between August 1 and now.  I managed only 6.  That’s not a complete failure, but it’s not a success either.  It’s still a half-ass effort on my part.

(2) Yoga: I haven’t made it a daily practice (yet), but my body has seen more downward-facing dogs and my mind has experienced more meditation in these last couple weeks than it did in most of July.  I’m improving on this front.

(3) Weight Loss:  I know I said I was losing a minimum of 5 pounds before this check in.  The last official weigh-in was 220.4 pounds.  Today’s official weigh-in? 219.6.  I didn’t even lose 1 pound, but I have dropped below the 220 pound mark, which isn’t insignificant! I could attribute this to adding weight-training back into the mix – because even though the scale isn’t showing me what I want to see, my clothes are feeling better on me – which means I’m achieving something.

In the August 1 post, I said I’d be beginning a Stratusphere 30-Day Challenge on August 16.  However, then I didn’t take into account a trip to Mark Twain Lake (Aug. 16-18) or Cody’s (my four year-old nephew) final week here before he goes home to Washington.  So I’m scheduling a new Stratusphere 30-Day Challenge start date for Wednesday, August 28! I’ll register online at Stratusphere 30-Day Challenge – via

For this update, I have two goals, the first of which borrows from Nike’s slogan:

(1) Just Do It! I’ll need to work on developing a yoga practice daily – doing cardio 4-5 times per week – and incorporating weight training on a consistent basis.  So here’s my pledge to you, and ultimately myself – I’m going to make this process transparent.  I’ll keep an exercise log and on the next check-in date, September 1, I’m reporting EVERYTHING and YOU and I will both see when I have/haven’t exercised and what I have/haven’t done.

(2) Weight Loss – Ideally, I’d love to pass the next milestone and drop below 215 pounds.  That said, my goal these next two weeks is to work hard and see where I end up.  So I’m going to have a weight range I’ll accept for September 1.  The goal is for me to weigh-in next time somewhere in the range of 213-217 pounds!

See you in September!

E! network has ordered 6 additional episodes of hit reality show Total Divas.  The WWE production features Brie and Nikki Bella (The Bella Twins), Natalya “Nattie” Neidhart, The Funkadactyls – Cameron (Arianne) and Naomi (Trinity), and developing divas Eva Marie and JoJo.  The season finale is set for Sunday, September 15.  New episodes are set to begin on Sunday, November 17, at 10/9c.

Darren Young 2A TMZ photographer asked WWE Superstar Darren Young about gay athletes in the WWE.  Young replied with his “coming out,” saying he was gay and he was happy.  If Young’s “outing” was sincere, then this makes him the first openly gay performer in the WWE.  Congratulations to him for his announcement – his bravery is commendable.  Follow the link for the full article and video at TMZ.

Radio Bobby: Top 5 New Music Releases (8/12)

After last week’s abysmal music showing – I could only find three songs worthy of Top 5 contention and their release dates were either limited/special (“Beautiful” by Ben Rector) or they were featured on iTunes after they were released (“Burn” by Ellie Goulding and “Free” by Rudimental f. Emeli Sande) … but never fear, Radio Bobby is back with a BANG!

This week, two pop mega-stars unveiled new singles and some sleepers came in to pleasantly deliver surprises! Here is your New Music Top 5:

Lady GaGa Applause1.  “Applause” by Lady GaGa (pop) – Lady GaGa declared a “Pop Emergency” after high and low quality leaks of her song became available all over the internet a week before the “Applause” release date.  In a mad dash, GaGa released “Applause” to radio stations and iTunes.  I contested she knew August 12 was my birthday – so she released it for me! Ha. Either way, the up-tempo track combines the vocal styling found frequently on her Born This Way album and pairs it with the electronic/dance backgrounds found on her debut album The Fame.  Here’s GaGa, back for the win.

2. “We Own the Night” by The Wanted (pop) – a nice up-tempo track with typically nice vocals from The Wanted!

3. “The River” by The Darcys (alternative) – there’s an ambiance about this song that I’m drawn to.  It’s a spoken, smoky lyric with a panic-inducing, percussive backdrop.  Quite good.

4. “Roar” by Katy Perry (pop) – Perry looks like she’ll continue to face criticism for the song’s similarity to Sara Bareilles’ “Brave”, released about a month prior.  That said, fans of “Brave” should have no problem liking “Roar.”  There’s enough room is music for both, yeah?

5. “Don’t You Want It” by The White Buffalo (singer/songwriter)
