ENTERTAINMENT news: The Wonderful World of Oz

Wicked Witch of the WestAre you ready to return to Oz?

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, the entertainment industry is planning to inundate us with the golden, ruby, and emerald world.  This year we’ve already been “treated” to that horrendous Disney film Oz the Great and Powerful (wait, what’s my beef with that? Find out here) and 2014 looks to bring us even more. These are the projects in development:

Heroes creator Tim Kring is developing Dorothy Must Die for the CW.  The drama imagines Dorothy having returned to Oz in the distant future and becoming a ruthless dictator alongside her henchmen – The Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man.  The story will feature an underground movement of witches and other enchanted beings planning to overthrow Dorothy.  Dorothy Must Die is being adapted from a forthcoming novel of the same title (due out April 1, 2014) by author Danielle Paige.

In addition to the CW’s development, NBC is developing Emerald City, a dark reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic tale, and CBS is working on an Oz-inspired medical soap opera.  All of this, of course, comes after Victor Fleming’s 1939 classic returns for a limited IMAX 3D engagement beginning Friday, September 20!

What are your thoughts?  I’m intrigued by 3 of the 4 projects (both TV and book version of Dorothy Must Die, and Emerald City), then again, I was intrigued and very excited for Oz the Great and Powerful – I’m hoping one of the four delivers!
