This morning the Supreme Court of the United States ruled (5-4) that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional and violates the 5th Amendment. Additionally, the Supreme Court dismissed California’s controversial Proposition 8, citing proponents lacked standing – ultimately returning freedom to marry to the state of California.
This is a watershed moment and as Rev. Betsy Happel said when I interviewed her in March: “We’re never going back.” We are living history and today especially, I am proud to be an American. Every American deserves an equal right to pursue happiness – regardless of their sexual orientation – because after all, we are all equal. I applaud the Supreme Court – this is a great day for the LGBT movement – and for America herself.
